I keep seeing foxtails all over town and wanted to remind everyone to steer clear of them while walking your dogs... They can be quite nasty! Due to their shape they can easily go one direction (up your dogs nose, in eyes, or stuck on fur) and can cause an emergency trip to the vet!

One quick google search and you can read all the lovely stores from other people who learned the hard way... Steer clear of these suckers!

This Thanksgiving there are so many things that I am thankful for.... I am so thankful to be in this business; the past 4 1/2 years have been fantastic. I love our clients (human and canine/feline), you so kindly open your homes to us and often treat us like we are apart of the family. We really love doing this and couldn't imagine ever going back to our "desk jobs".

I received a very sweet email today from Riley's mom.... They were daily dog walking clients of ours for the past 2 years and just recently moved to Colorado. The email was very kind & I just have to share part of it! It said:

"Hi Suzanne, I hope all is well. We miss you so much, you have no idea! Riley is actually doing pretty well at the new house. I am on the search for a new dog walker and so far, no luck. They just don't give me the same vide as you and Penny did that first time I met you."

I am often asked for veterinarian referrals and I figured it was a LONG overdue posting topic...

Back in 2006 (when I started Walk the Dog), I was working part time at the front desk of the VCA Coast Animal Hospital. It was such a great experience for me. I learned so many valuable medical tidbits about vaccinations and countless other lovely bits that come along with being an animal caregiver (like how to avoid parasites: don't let your dog drink from puddles on the ground)...

This is where I met Dr. Jennifer Kitchen. She is just an amazing person and veterinarian. She cares so much for animals and their well being. She's honest and takes the time to explain those crazy medical terms. I highly recommend her! (p.s. they have a new client promo where your first doctors exam is free.)

Dr. Kitchen recently sent me an email about a dangerous cocoa mulch that is sold at Target... Let me know if you'd like the details and I"ll forward her email to you. I know some of you have pets that will eat anything (see photo above, Maggie ate a hole in the stairs back in 2008- no joke), so this might be helpful info!

I've not blogged very much lately, oops! I just come across these funny pictures and had to share them. This is Rocky & Skipper (in case you don't know already).... They stayed here at my house a while ago and I snapped these in about 30 seconds - here in my office.

Just at the sight of my camera this is what they do. Tails wagging (well, Rocky's tail) - begging poses and funny whimper whines. I just adore these dogs! Looking forward to having them over to my house again in a few weeks!

I know that all of my childhood experiences with Skippy, Strawberry, Chelsea, Sparky, and all my hamsters & fish helped to mold me into the animal lover that I am today....

The randomness of dog walking...

One of the many things I love about this "job" is all the fantastic / crazy / funny things I see everyday. In my former career (visual buyer for a fashion company in downtown LA) my days completely lacked the following "bits of life"...

Most of these pictures are silly cell phone snap shots... But you'll get the idea.

#1 Sunsets! I love being able to see the sunset almost everyday...

#2 Unconditional Love. Riley here loves his belly rubbed and will do some crazy acrobatics to get himself on his back (while wiggling) to get some attention. It's such a highlight of my day to be able to make an animal happy by a simple walk, belly rub or being there for feeding time.

#3 Katie (pictured above - being toweled off after a walk in the rain). She has learned the sound of my car and will RUN to the gate the second she knows I'm there... How sweet is that?

#4 Dogs who appear to be pondering "life" or just checkin out the waves.. Not sure.

#5 Spike is enjoying a bone that is almost bigger than he is! This picture reminds me how much love there is in the world... (I know I sound totally nuts)

But, my clients LOVE their pets so much! I am so blessed to be apart of their daily lives.

#6 Randomness. Sometimes I witness some crazy things. This day was one of them. This pup decided he wanted to carry his own poop bag. I certainly wouldn't refuse that, right?! I'm not kidding, he actually took it from me... Granted we were 3 steps from the trash (and really he just wanted a treat).. But wow, what a funny moment.

Week of rain

Last week was crazy! 5 straight days of rain... The severe wind and cold temperatures certainly didn't make it any easier!

Yes, we do walk in the rain... But when it becomes uncomfortable to the dogs we certainly cut walks short (which also allows us time to towel dry the wet paws and tummies).

Meet Ginger......

Ginger is getting accustomed to her new life and new home.... But unfortunately would NOT walk with us. (We've been trying for the past week.) Today Penny showed up wearing a sweatshirt with a pocket for your hands (not sure what they are called)... Anyways, as you can see Ginger LOVED her "pouch" and happily enjoyed the scenery as we walked her friends. Finally, on the second half of the walk she was comfortable enough to walk along with us. We were so proud of her. She wasn't fearful at all! Her tail was wagging and she was loving it. It may sound silly to those of you that don't know her, but what a BIG day for Ginger!

Possible New Dog Run at Polliwog Park

Just got an email from Marty Friedman (he runs FIDO) with some exciting developments for MB dog owners:

"The Community Dog Advisory Committee will present a proposed dog run in Polliwog Park at the Parks & Recreation meeting on Monday, October 26th at 6:30 pm. I don't appreciate too much opposition, but it is always helpful to have a bunch of dog owners present to demonstrate support for additional recreation opportunities for our dogs. We are supposedly the first idem on the agenda, so hopefully we will be on at 6:30 and finished by 7:15.

Assuming the Commission recommends approval, we will try to get on City Council's Agenda in one of the two November meetings.

This past weekend at the Hermosa fair, I had the pleasure of seeing Leslie at the Peter Zippi booth. Leslie & I know each other from my past days of working at the VCA Animal Hospital. If you know of anyone ever wanting to adopt a cat, I can honestly say this organization is amazing. I can HIGHLY recommend them.... They have such a fantastic group of volunteers that work so hard to make sure each and every one of these cats have a loving home. They are very meticulous and make sure all the cats are current on vaccinations, deworming, are spayed/neutered, and are overall loved & healthy.

Thanks Leslie & your amazing team for doing so much for these homeless kitties. You are such an inspiration.

This week I've been asked twice on two separate occasions: "How can you walk dogs in this terrible heat?"

Here is my answer for those of you that are curious....

Obviously our #1 concern is safely for the animals. We stop for water several times, and are constantly seeking shade. I've found that the east side of Ocean Ave is perfectly shaded by the houses from the strand.

We tend to walk slower when it's THIS hot... It's pretty easy to just follow the pace of the dog (they certainly appreciate it)... We also are checking the heat on the ground. Some surfaces like black pavement are hotter than lighter colored concrete... We pay close attention to these details and try very hand to accommodate these necessary precautions.

When possible, we move the walking schedule around so that walks can take place in the early morning or late afternoon....

And the #1 thing we do to keep the furry ones comfortable: Pour fresh cool water on their necks & backs. At first they don't like it (but with a little neck massage, they love it).

Time to hire a new person!

Over the last 3.5 years, Walk the Dog has grown and grown... I'm so thankful and appreciative of all the fantastic clients I have (the 4 legged - and 2 Legged ones). It's amazing that I've been able to grow this business solely on referrals and a few business cards at the VCA animal hospital. I'm truly blessed.

I love my "job" and the work is incredibly rewarding ... So working 7 days a week (and holidays) isn't really a big deal for me. But there's only so much that Penny and I can do in a day. We looked into scheduling our time based on a 26 hour day, but the logistics involved for slowing the earth's rotation seemed a bit daunting. Looked into cloning too, but apparently that's still only an option for sheep that live in the Netherlands. Ha Ha Ha....

Our research left us with the slightly more conventional conclusion... it's time to hire a new crew member.

It's going to be a hard task of finding someone I trust. I'm really a picky person when it comes to interviews. When I hired Penny (over a year ago), I went thru over 100 applicants. Phone interviews first, then face to face interviews, endless question asking, checking references... Then finally background checks & possibly even a drug test (I'm slightly neurotic when it comes to hiring someone who is going to be representing ME!).... We're looking with someone who is trustworthy, has a love for animals and their well being, has general common sense, is able to stick to a schedule, has above average communication skills, has an honest & general kind soul, can function as a team player, is respectful of our clients homes & personal lives... just to name of few... In other words, on a scale of 1-10, they've got to be a 10!

Initially, our new hire will be helping carry the load on weekends and holidays... Once they get into their groove, we'll be looking to you, our clients, to help spread the word about Walk the Dog to your friends and family in the South Bay.

Thanks again to every one of our loyal clients who trust us day in and day out with their 4-legged babies. I'm confident that whomever joins our team will be able to help us to better meet the needs of our current clients, as well as help serve the needs of other loving pet parents across the South Bay!

Wish me luck, the search is about to begin!!

Ahhhh The Hollywood sign..... It's a great dog friendly hike with a fantastic view of LA & the valley....

We met some friends for the hike....

And enjoying running off leash!

This French Bulldog decided to walk with us & he completely abandoned his owners for a while... It was funny!

Hiking at Will Rogers State Park

Last weekend we went hiking at Will Rogers State Park in Santa Monica. It's a super easy, dog friendly hike with an amazing view from the top! Tyger joined us & had a blast.

I spent the morning in Malibu with Jen Rau (my super talented wedding photographer). Jen was kind enough to show me a few pointers w/ my new camera! Tyger was the lucky "model" & he did a great job. He mainly was fired up about the treats! Aren't these shots amazing?!?!?!!! Thanks Jen! (All the good ones she shot w/ her amazing lens.) Also, THANKS to Penny for covering my walks for the day!

JJ had a blast at the dog park today! He was absolutely filthy when we left. Oh the fun life of a dog.... He also made friends with Scooby, a super sweet chocolate lab (who didn't mind sharing his toy). Thanks Scooby!
